Sourdough on a Somewhat Sour Note: Bath and Bodywork’s Homemade Sourdough Scent Review

It seems like homemade sourdough bread is trending at at an all time high because even I was almost sold on a sourdough starter kit for dummies and I don’t know rye. Get it? All jokes aside this yummy bread is all over social media and the influencers are driving the vibe. But what if you don’t bake? What if you can’t get that sourdough starter to rise? I was hesitant to buy this candle but I got just one because I knew it was going to be controversial. And indeed it is with one reddit user stating it “smells like cold sad sourdough straight from the fridge” noting that they missed the toasted note in it and I couldn’t agree more. I expected something savory with a light buttery note which I do not love but I knew it would get talked about but the contrast is that is has a sweet note.

It smells like a very fresh baked load taken out a bit early and cut into for cold storage; so, slightly underdone. It lacks that toasted bread smell that one would expect in a freshly baked loaf of sourdough bread. Though I could be wrong seeing as I have never baked one myself. I’ve only ever purchased the half done ones from the store that you have to finish baking yourself and it resembles that; not quite finished and raw, cold, sad like she said.

But I don’t hate it and here is why. It smells kind of good like the beginning of the bake before it even starts to cook. You can smell the yeast and the olive oil and something mildly sweet. I expected it to be very savory but it’s not and I think that’s what makes it so polarizing to other people. If the faint smell of yeast and something sweet sounds awful to you this won’t be for you.

But if you understand and love the smell from beginning to end of a fresh baked loaf of sourdough bread then this would be right for you. It feels like home and comfort and a nice cup of warm tea which is still soothing in spite of the warmer months ahead but this one will be so good as it starts to cool off in my opinion so get one and see how you would feel about it then. I don’t think it makes for a great warm weather scent but you can buy it now and save it for then.
